Lifelong Hoosier’s Guide to Indiana’s 2026 Fall and Holiday Gatherings

Every year right around the time the garden gets put to bed and the morning frost starts hitting the pumpkin vines, this state comes alive. If you were born and raised in Indiana, you know that late September through December is when our communities shine brightest. It is time to stock the pantry, pick up a few jars of fresh apple butter, and hit the road to see neighbors across the county line.
Whether you are looking for heritage craft demonstrations, good food, or a solid evening with the family, here is what is on the calendar across our neck of the woods this season.
Fall Festivals and Pioneer Traditions

The granddaddy of them all is the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival. Running ten days from October 9 through October 18, it brings people from everywhere into west central Indiana to check out thirty-one historic covered bridges. You can grab plenty of homemade crullers, kettle corn, and handmade woodcrafts while taking in the backroads. You do not need a ticket to walk around and enjoy the towns.
Down in Martinsville, the Morgan County Fall Foliage Festival runs October 8 through October 11. It is a genuine community fair with classic rides, craft booths, and a solid Sunday parade. Over the same stretch of days, Harvest Homecoming takes over downtown New Albany along the Ohio River with craft booths, live music, and their famous pumpkin contest.
If you like old-time homesteading and traditional skills, mark October 17 on the calendar for the Sorghum Festival in Marengo. Watching sweet sorghum get pressed and cooked down the traditional way is something everyone ought to see at least once. That very same weekend, October 17 and 18, Fort Vallonia Days gives folks a look into early frontier life, black powder shoots, and traditional trade crafts. Franklin also hosts their Hoosier Fall Festival that weekend.
On October 24, North Salem hosts their single-day Fall Colors Festival, which is a great excuse to take the back highways during peak tree color. That same weekend, October 24 and 25, head up to West Lafayette for the Feast of the Hunters’ Moon at Fort Ouiatenon. It sits right along the Wabash River and recreates the eighteenth-century French and Native American trading post era. You will smell woodsmoke, taste authentic voyageur stew, and see how our ancestors actually lived and traded.
For pure orchard harvest, the Mt. Zion Applefest in Grandview runs October 10 and 11. It is the place to load up on fresh-pressed cider, apple butter by the pint, and fresh fried pies.
Halloween Gatherings

Mid to late October brings out the best neighborhood Halloween traditions. Over in Fishers, Conner Prairie hosts the Headless Horseman festival Thursdays through Sundays from October 1 through October 25. The haunted hayride through the back timber remains a classic rite of passage, and making a stop at their Apple Store for warm cider donuts and caramel apples is mandatory.
The Children’s Museum Guild Haunted House in Indianapolis marks its sixty-second year from October 9 through October 31 with their Fright Academy theme. They offer friendly lights-on hours for the little grandkids and full scares after dark.
On the east side of Indy, the Historic Irvington Halloween Festival celebrates eighty years from October 24 through October 31. The big street fair on Halloween day fills the historic streets with local artisans, costume contests, and incredible neighborhood pride.
Also on October 24, Greenwood puts on their local Halloween Fest and Parade, while downtown Indianapolis hosts a vibrant Dia de Muertos community celebration featuring traditional altars and music. Wrapping up the month on October 31, Fair Oaks Farms up north puts on their Halloween Trail, mixing trick-or-treating with genuine farm life.
Christmas Markets and Winter Lights

Once the woodstove gets fired up and December rolls around, Indiana shifts right into traditional holiday celebrations.
Carmel Christkindlmarkt opens November 21 and runs through Christmas Eve, closed Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thanksgiving. It is patterned right after old-world European markets with genuine wooden vendor huts, authentic bratwurst, hot spiced glühwein, and hand-carved wood ornaments. The Athenaeum Christkindlmarkt in downtown Indianapolis also runs weekends starting November 27 through December 20 in the historic Rathskeller courtyard.
Down south, Ferdinand holds their traditional Christkindlmarkt on November 21 and 22, while Jasper celebrates O’Tannenbaum Days from December 3 through December 6, showcasing the deep German roots and handcraft traditions of the area.
If you are packing the family in the truck to look at lights, Christmas at the Zoo runs November 21 through January 3, and Newfields turns the grounds into Winterlights across that same stretch. For staying warm in the cab, Christmas Nights of Lights offers a drive-through display at the state fairgrounds from November 6 through New Year’s Eve, while Shipshewana Lights of Joy lights up northern Amish country starting November 10.
Down in Spencer County, the town of Santa Claus does Christmas right. The Santa Claus Land of Lights drive-through runs November 27 through December 23, and their town celebration features an old-fashioned holiday parade on December 12.
Rounding out the early winter trips, Bloomington flips the switch on their Canopy of Lights on November 27. New Harmony hosts their historic small-town Christmas celebration December 5 and 6, and Madison dresses up its nineteenth-century Ohio River riverfront for A Very Merry Madison Christmas on December 5.
Get the boots ready, check the truck’s tire pressure, and take time this season to support your local makers, growers, and small towns.
